Philippe Jaccottet was born in 1925 in Moudon in Western Switzerland. He went to school to Lausanne and visited university there. After living briefly in Rome and Paris, he married the painter Anne-Maire Hasler in 1953 and has been living since then in Grignan in the South of France. Besides poetry, his first book of poems was published in 1953, he also writes prose in which Jaccottet reflects poetically on his work as a poet and translator. He translated to French works of Homer, Tasso, Leopardi, Ungaretti and Montale, from German he translated works of Rilke, Hölderlin, Thomas Mann, Ludwig Hohl and Robert Musil.
