wolf christaChrista Wolf was born in 1929 in Landsberg an der Warthe. After finishing high school in Bad Frankenhausen, she joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in 1949. From 1949 to 1953, she studied German language and literature at the Universities of Jena and Leipzig, thereafter working as a scientific collaborator of the German Writers’ Association, as a reader for book publishers, as the editor of the magazine “neue deutsche literatur” and as the editor-in-chief of the publishing house “Neues Leben”. From 1959 to 1962, she was the editor-in-chief of the publishing house “Mitteldeutscher Verlag” in Halle. After 1962 she was a full-time writer. Christa Wolf is considered one of the most prominent contemporary writers; her prose work is extensive and has been translated into laguages all over the world. She received numerous awards, including the Georg Büchner prize, the Thomas Mann prize, and the Uwe Johnson prize. Christa Wolf died in 2011 in Berlin.
