Sanja Lovrenčić, Croatian author and translator, has published several volumes of poetry: Insula dulcamara (1987), Skrletne tkanine/Scarlet Fabrics(1994), Upute šetaču u vrtu sa zborovima/Instructions for Walking in Gardens with Choirs, U slobodnoj četvrti/In the free Quarter (2002) and Rijeka sigurno voli poplavu/The river surely loves the tide (2006). Her poems have appeared in national and foreign magazines and have been translated into German, English, Polish, Russian and Slovenian.


She is the author of several prose works, including the collection of short stories Wien Fantastic (Vienna Fantastic) (1998) and Porter cue/Portrait of the House (2002), the novel Collide (2000), Siren took/Complete Island (2002) and Klizalište/Ice rink (2005) as well as Dvostruki dnevnik žene sa zmajem/Woman with a Dragon (2005), in which diary entries and excerpts from the text of a play are interwoven with each other. Her biographical novel about the Croatian writer Ivana Brlić Mažuranić U potrazi za Ivanom/A Portrait of Ivana was published in 2006.

Sanja Lovrenčić also writes for children and has published the volumes of stories Esperel - grad malih čuda/Esperel – The City of Small Miracles (1994 and 2006), Kuća iznad čudovišta/The House above the Monster (1996), Četiri strašna Fufoždera i jedan mali Fufić/Four terrible Fufich eaters and one small Fufich (2001), Sunčev sjaj/Sunshine (2005) and Priče o godišnjim dobima/Seasonal stories (2007) as well as a children’s novel Godina bez zeca/The Year without the Rabbit (2004) and several well-received picture books.

A series of her radio plays were broadcast by Croatian radio, including several prize-winning radio dramas, which were published in various magazines and anthologies (Mlinovi/The Mills, Pisma drugom čuvaru/Letter to the Other Guard, Devet oktava/Nine Octaves, Arielov otok/Ariel’s Island). Some of these have been translated and broadcast in German, Hungarian, Slovenian and Estonian and broadcast.

As a freelance author of radio documentaries she recorded some documentary plays which she directed herself; with her radio-programme Ispod lipe nam zelene/Beneath our green linden tree, which she created together with Zvjezdan Jembrih, she represented Croatian Radio at the Festival Prix Italia 2007.

She also works as a literary translator from English, French and German and in 2004 she was included in the IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) Honour List for her translation of the C.S.Lewis book Konj i njegov dječak/The Horse and His Boy.

ASSITEJ-Prize 1997 for the best theatre play for young people for “Bajka o Sigismundi i Krpimiru” (Fairy Tale of Sigismund and Krpimir)

“Grigor Vitez”-Prize 2001 for the best children’s book for “Četiri strašna Fufoždera i jedan mali Fufić” (Four terrible Fufic eaters and one small Fufich)

“Gjalski”-Prize 2007 for the Prose Work of the Year for the novel “U potrazi za Ivanom” (A Portrait of Ivana)

“Kiklop”-Prize 2007 for the Poetry Book of the Year for the book “Rijeka sigurno voli poplavu” (The River surely Loves the Tide)
