Jacob Taubes, born in 1923 in Vienna, comes from an old rabbi family that emigrated to Zurich in 1936, thus saving itself from the Holocaust. In 1943, Jacob Taubes completed his rabbi education and then studied Philosophy and History in Basel and Zurich, earning his doctor title in 1947 with his work on occidental eschatology. From 1949, he taught at the universities of Jerusalem, Princeton, New York, and the Free University of Berlin, until he finally accepted a permanent guest lectureship at Maison des Sciences de l'Homme in Paris. He died in 1987.
