Tomaž Šalamun, born in 1941 in Zagreb, grew up in the Slovenian city of Koper. Today he lives in Ljubljana and for part of the time in the United States, where he spent two years at the University of Iowa and worked for a while as the Cultural Attaché at the Slovenian Embassy in New York. His volume of poetry Poker
(1966), which was followed by 30 more volumes, marked a new beginning in Slovenian poetry. Tomaž Šalamun’s poems have been translated into almost all European languages.
