Uwe Timm was born on March, 30th 1940 in Hamburg, Germany. After primary school he trained as a furrier and attended the Braunschweigkolleg, an institute for adult education. He graduated from high school in 1963. After that he studied German language and literature and Philosophy in Munich and Paris. 1967/68 he was active in Sozialistischer Deutscher Studentenbund (Socialist German Student Union). In 1971 he was awarded a doctor's degree with his thesis about the Problem of apsuridity asurdity? in the works of Camus. 1970-1972 he studied sociology and economy in Munich. Since 1971 he has lived as an independent writer. 1971/72 he founded the Wortgruppe München, and was a co-editor of the journal Literarische Hefte. From 1972-1982 he edited the AutorenEdition, a collective and unhierarchical publishing project that emerged within the Bertelsmann publishing house. In 1981 he was Writer in Residence at the University of Warwick, Great Britain. From 1981-1983 he lived in Rome. 1991/1992 guest lectureship for writers in Paderborn. Since 1994 he has been a regular member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry, German P.E.N. Center and the Academy of Arts.
He lives as an independent author in Munich and Berlin.
