Florenz und Bagdad: Eine westöstliche Geschichte des Blicks

Belting, Hans.

belting_florenzHow and what we see is characterised to a large extent by the culture, in which we live. A history of the image is therefore incomplete without a cultural history of the vision. Hans Belting compares the vision of the Western world, which was born in the Florence of the Renaissance and which produced completely new types of images, with those of the Islamic world. Within this, Baghdad plays a crucial role as a cultural centre, also for the art of the West – a role not known about until now.

Florenz und Bagdad: Eine westöstliche Geschichte des Blicks (title of the English translation: Florence and Baghdad: Renaissance Art and Arab Science) by Hans Belting has been translated into Croatian (excerpt) by Nataša Medved under the title Firenca i Bagdad: Zapadno-istočna povijest pogleda, published by Fraktura, Zagreb.
