In doing so he became more and more ensnared in the hell of everyday life under the Ceauçescu dictatorship. Plicul negru is the last novel of the author before his emigration to the USA.

Plicul negru [The Black Envelope] by Norman Manea has been translated into Croatian (excerpt) by Ivana Olujić and Luca-Ioan Frana under the title Crna omotnica, published by Fraktura, Zagreb.
